Lonavala, Karjat, Mahabaleshwar or Alibaug: choosing an offsite destination near Pune
All four are within a few hours of Pune, and they are not interchangeable. Where your team is travelling from and when you're going usually decide it.

For a corporate offsite near Pune, Lonavala suits teams split between Pune and Mumbai because it sits on the expressway between them; Karjat suits the same split with more private, farmhouse-style properties; Mahabaleshwar suits smaller leadership groups who want a cooler climate and real distance from the office, outside the monsoon; and Alibaug suits Mumbai-heavy teams who can take the ferry to Mandwa. Where attendees are travelling from and the time of year usually decide the choice more than the resorts themselves.
Start with where your team is coming from
The four destinations within easy reach of Pune are all capable offsite locations, and their resorts overlap more than the brochures suggest. What separates them for a corporate group is mostly logistics: where attendees are travelling from, how they travel, and what the weather will be doing on your dates.
Settle those three questions first and the shortlist usually narrows to one or two places on its own.
The four compared
- Lonavala — about 65 km from Pune on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, and similarly placed for Mumbai. The natural midpoint for a team split between the two cities, with the widest choice of resorts in the region and the shortest journey for most groups. The trade-off is that it gets busy on weekends and holidays.
- Karjat — around 100 km from Pune by road, and closer to Mumbai. A resort and farmhouse belt where groups can often take a whole property to themselves, which suits team-building formats and leadership retreats.
- Mahabaleshwar — around 120 km from Pune, with the last stretch up a ghat road; allow three hours or more. Cooler weather and a real sense of distance make it a strong choice for smaller leadership groups. It is less convenient for Mumbai-based attendees, and the monsoon changes it substantially.
- Alibaug — around 140 km from Pune by road, so a long drive from the Pune side. From Mumbai, the Ro-Ro ferry to Mandwa takes about an hour of sailing time, which makes it the most practical coastal option for Mumbai-heavy teams.
Drive times across the region depend heavily on ghat traffic, weekends and weather. Plan transport on the slow end of any estimate.
Plan around the monsoon
From roughly June to September the monsoon shapes all four destinations, and Mahabaleshwar most of all: it is among the wettest places in peninsular India, and outdoor programming there is unreliable through the peak months. Ghat roads to all four can slow considerably in heavy rain.
Lonavala stays popular in the monsoon for its scenery, but in recent seasons the Pune district administration has restricted access to waterfalls, dams and some viewpoints around it during heavy rain. An offsite planned for those months should assume indoor sessions and have an indoor alternative for anything scheduled outdoors.
Outside the monsoon, the period to watch is the winter wedding season, when resorts across the region book up early and corporate groups compete with weddings for the same weekends.
Match the destination to the group
- Large groups with mixed Pune and Mumbai attendance — Lonavala, for resort capacity and the shortest average journey.
- Mid-sized teams who want a property to themselves — Karjat.
- Small leadership groups whose priority is focus and distance from the office — Mahabaleshwar, outside the monsoon.
- Mumbai-led teams who want the coast — Alibaug, travelling by ferry.
These are starting points rather than rules. A specific resort's meeting spaces, room count and availability on your dates will often decide it.
Travel is part of the programme
The journey is the part of an offsite most often left to attendees to sort out, and the part most likely to go wrong: people arriving at different times, late check-ins, and a first session that starts with half the room missing. Coordinated transport, such as a coach from each city with a fixed departure time, costs less than the lost first half-day it prevents.
It also changes the schedule. With a journey of two or three hours, a first working session before lunch is unrealistic; plan it for the afternoon and let the arrival be the informal part of the programme.
We plan offsites in all four destinations from our Pune base, with the same in-house production crew as a city event, so the stage, AV and décor are consistent wherever the venue is.

Related questions
Which offsite destination near Pune is best for a team split between Pune and Mumbai?
Lonavala, in most cases. It sits on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, so neither group faces a long journey, and it has the widest choice of resorts in the region. Karjat is a good alternative if the group wants a more private, farmhouse-style property.
Is Mahabaleshwar a good offsite choice in the monsoon?
Generally not for a programme that depends on the outdoors. Mahabaleshwar receives very heavy rainfall from roughly June to September, and ghat travel can be slow. Between October and May it is one of the strongest options near Pune for a small leadership group.
How do Mumbai-based attendees get to Alibaug?
Most take the Ro-Ro ferry from Mumbai to Mandwa, which is about an hour of sailing time, followed by a short drive. The road route is considerably longer.
